Continuing through France, this short flat stage passes through residential suburbs of Strasbourg before closely following the Rhine. The route is mostly through woods, running on or beside the river flood dyke.

Leave Strasbourg along N side of main canal running east to west, S of city centre. This starts as Quai Louis Pasteur, with hospital L and canal R. Continue ahead on cycle track R of road as name changes to Quai Menachem Taffel, followed by Quai Fustel de Coulanges then Quai du Général Koenig and finally Quai des Alpes. The approaches to five bridges are crossed. Major work has been undertaken to revive the former dock area on the opposite side of the canal. Follow quayside as it bears L along Quai des Belges under another bridge and continues, firstly as Rue Général Picquart becoming Rue du Général Conrad. Where this turns away from canal, bear R to follow cycle track along canal side and continue round bend L at canal junction. At approach to first bridge, bear L climbing up to bridge and turn R over canal. To visit Strasbourg’s European Quarter, do not cross the canal, rather continue ahead for 1km to reach the main European buildings on both sides of the canal.

Its transnational position on the borders of France and Germany has made Strasbourg an attractive location for many important European government and legal institutions. Located in the high-tech buildings of the European Quarter (Quartier Européen), at the intersection of the Marne–Rhine canal and the river Ill, north-east of the city centre, they include the Medicines Directorate, Court of Human Rights and Agora office building (north of the canal), the Council of Europe and European Ombudsman (south of the canal) and the European Parliament (in the fork between the canal and the Ill). The location in Strasbourg of the latter has caused considerable controversy, as there are also Parliament buildings in Brussels and Luxembourg, causing parliamentary members, officers and staff to live peripatetic lives between these three cities.
